Why does my medical practice have GPs booked out and GPs with gaps?

Medical centres in Australia rarely run short of people looking for a doctor. In Canberra, “GP near me” is searched about 1,900 times a month, and in Cairns people search for a GP, doctor or medical centre about 3,600 times a month. The trouble is which GP they land on and what they book. Fixing it takes marketing matched to how many GPs you have.

What's going wrong now

  • Senior GPs booked out, newer GPs and registrars with gaps
  • Known as the walk-in clinic, not for skin checks or women’s health
  • Directories and corporate centres take the search
  • The front desk answering the same billing calls all day

What our clients get

  • New patients booked with the GP who has room
  • Bookings for the services you want to grow
  • Patients who find your clinic first and book direct
  • Billing and new-patient answers on the website, not the phone

We can't promise you a number of new patients, because no one can. This is what we see again and again with past clients.

Case study · A chiropractor in Mackay

Our nearest proof: a chiropractor in Mackay went from 5.9 to 9.3 online bookings a day

This is a chiropractic clinic, not a medical centre, yet its new patients book the way yours do: Google Maps, then the website, then an online booking. With three chiropractors it was already on rung two and running Google Ads. We rebuilt the website, linked every service to the Google profile, and left the Google Ads exactly as they were.

  • Online bookings a day5.99.3First 10 days after launch
  • Completed online bookings292351Six weeks before and after launch
  • Cost per booking from Google Ads$15.62$13.82Same ads, same $2,558 spend

They'd been paying for SEO before the rebuild. The new website did so well that they stopped the SEO, as we recommend on rung two, then got so busy they cut back their Google Ads too.

First, a medical practice website that books new patients

Every other channel sends patients to your website, so a medical centre's marketing starts there, with the Google Business Profile linked to it. For a practice with one or two GPs, that pair is usually all the marketing it needs, so it's usually where we start. The call confirms it, because GP clinics vary and some break the rule.

  • A page for every GP

Patients pick the doctor: each GP gets a page with their interests, languages, gender and whether their books are open to new patients.

  • A page for every service

Skin checks, women’s health, chronic disease care plans, travel vaccinations and minor procedures each get their own page, so patients see the whole practice.

  • Your Google Maps profile, linked

Each service on your Google Business Profile points to its own page, so you show up for “skin check”, not only for “medical centre”.

  • Inside the Medical Board and TGA rules

“Specialist” only where the register says so, no prescription medicine or vaccine brand named, and no testimonial about care on any page.

  • New patients booked online

New patients see which GPs are taking them and book straight into HotDoc, HealthEngine or your Best Practice or MedicalDirector bookings.

Once your website is live

More medical marketing services we provide

With new patients booking online, four more services build on the website. Google Ads fills the books of each GP you add, and SEO comes in when you bring allied health under your roof or open a second medical centre.

What to pay for, and when

The New Patient Growth Ladder for medical practices

One or two GPs? A website linked to Google Maps is usually enough. Adding GPs or registrars? Add Google Ads to fill their books. Adding allied health, a skin cancer clinic or a second medical centre? Add SEO.

  1. 2+ disciplines and/or 2+ clinicsRung 3: + SEO
  2. 3+ GPsRung 2: + Google Ads
  3. 1–2 GPsRung 1: Website + Google MapsStart here

AI SEO is part of the website on rung one, and grows with SEO on rung three. Bulk billing, mixed or private billing doesn't move you up or down: the rung is set by your GPs and your sites. On the call we confirm which rung you're on, because there are always exceptions.

How it works for medical centres

  1. Step 1

Book your New Patient Growth Call

Thirty minutes on Zoom. We look at your website, your Google profile and what ChatGPT says about your clinic, and confirm which rung you’re on.

  2. Step 2

    Get your plan

We show you the next steps for your rung and what they cost. If you don't need us, we'll say so. Then you decide.

  3. Step 3

    We interview you, then build

About an hour with you and your GPs on the services, interests and billing, then we write and build it. Live in about 30 days, and you sign off every page.

  4. Step 4

    Watch bookings, then climb

See new patients book online with the GPs who have room. Add Google Ads when you add GPs, and SEO when you add disciplines or clinics.

Why GP clinics work with us

  • We start with your doctors

We interview you and your GPs, so every profile says what each doctor enjoys treating, in words a patient understands.

  • Written inside the rules

Every page and ad is checked against the Medical Board's advertising guidance and the TGA's ban on advertising prescription medicines.

  • Measured in new patients

You see new patient bookings by GP and by service, not rankings and clicks.

  • Only what your practice needs

Every GP booked out? Marketing would only lengthen the wait, so we'll tell you to hold off until you add a doctor.

  • Works with your booking system

HotDoc, HealthEngine, Best Practice, MedicalDirector or Zedmed: patients still book in the system your front desk runs.

  • Billing said plainly

Who is bulk billed and who pays a gap, in one clear sentence wherever a patient looks, so fewer people ring to ask.

Medical marketing questions practice owners ask

How much does marketing a medical practice cost?

It depends on which services your medical practice needs, and we can only tell once we've looked, so we work it out with you on a free New Patient Growth Call. A clinic with one or two GPs usually only needs rung one: a website and Google Maps, paid once. Google Ads and SEO are monthly costs. We only raise them once your clinic is ready.

Do I need SEO or Google Ads for my medical centre?

Not yet if you have one or two GPs at one site: Google Maps and a website that books new patients bring in most of them. Google Ads fits when you add GPs or registrars whose books need filling. SEO fits when you add another discipline, such as physio or psychology rooms or a skin clinic, or open a second medical centre. We call that the New Patient Growth Ladder. Your rung is confirmed on the call.

Every GP at our clinic is booked out. Should we market at all?

Not for more patients in general. If every GP's books are closed, more marketing only makes the wait longer. Two things still pay off: telling patients clearly which GPs are taking new patients, so the phone stops ringing about it, and growing the services you choose, such as skin checks or care plans. When you add a GP, that's the time to market for new patients.

How do I fill a new GP's or registrar's books?

Give the new doctor their own page from day one and point searches at it. Patients choose a GP by gender, language and interests, so a page that says who they are and that their books are open does more than a name on the team list. Google Ads for searches like “skin check” or “women's health GP” can then send new patients straight to that doctor's appointments.

Can we advertise weight-loss injections, flu vaccines or other medicines?

Not by name. The TGA bans advertising prescription-only medicines to the public, directly or indirectly, and that includes weight-loss injections and vaccine brands. A medical centre can advertise the service, such as a weight management consult or flu vaccinations, in neutral words. Google also blocks prescription drug terms in Australian ads. We write every page and ad around the service, never the product.

Can our GPs call themselves specialists?

Only a GP with specialist registration in general practice can use the title “specialist general practitioner”, and registrars can't use “specialist” at all. “Surgeon” is restricted too. For an interest such as skin cancer or women's health, “special interest in” or “working primarily in” is the safer wording. We check every title against the public register before a page goes live.

How should we show bulk billing on our website?

In one clear sentence on every page a patient checks before booking. A fully bulk billing practice in the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program needs to say so publicly. A mixed billing clinic should say who is bulk billed (for example concession card holders and children) and that other patients pay a gap. Clear billing saves your front desk the same call many times a day.

Do you work with HotDoc, HealthEngine or Best Practice?

Yes. We work with the booking and practice software GP clinics use, including HotDoc, HealthEngine, Best Practice, MedicalDirector and Zedmed. Patients still book in your system. We change what comes before it, so a new patient picks a GP who is taking new patients and the right appointment type, with telehealth shown where you offer it.

How long before my medical practice gets more bookings?

That depends on the service. A new website shows up in bookings quickly: online bookings at the Mackay chiropractor went from 5.9 to 9.3 a day within 10 days. Google Ads work from the day they start. Google Maps and SEO build over months. We can't promise a number of new patients, because no one can. But this is what we see again and again with past clients.
